Gold & Silver Not Just For The Olympics

Just in time for the World Cup this summer, Nike is celebrating the history of their Mercurial cleat made famous by the Brazilian striker Ronaldo. Yesterday the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX Fast Forward ’02 edition was unveiled with a chrome finish like the original 2002 cleat worn by Ronaldo in Japan and South Korea.

Gold and silver tend to be popular colors for top players in the World Cup. Ronaldinho and Zidane both wore special edition gold cleats in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Expect some more gold cleats for the World Cup this summer in Brazil as well. Adidas recently shelved their Nitrocharge gold edition with a Kevlar upper for undisclosed reasons, but there is always a chance that they will release a gold or silver edition of their more classic cleats in the coming months.
