The final draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup took place today, and the USMNT didn’t quite get what they were hoping for… by a long shot. Watching the final draw proved to be pretty exciting, as you could almost see a Group of Death forming with each team drawn from the bowl. Portugal was the last team to be called for Group G, and it felt like the final nail in the coffin.

This is apparently the toughest Group of Death in the last 20 years, so let’s hope that the USMNT is up for the challenge. Ghana ended the last two US World Cup runs (opportunity for major redemption?), and Germany is a three-time World Cup Champion. Let’s not count Cristiano Ronaldo’s team out either. ESPN FC has the US at a 39.4% chance of advancing, but Portugal is only narrowly ahead with a 40.6% chance. It’s uncertain who will advance with such tough competition, but there will certainly be some epic games played.

While it’s unfortunate that the US team is in for an uphill battle after that first whistle blows, making it out of the group stage would set them up to advance deep into the tournament. Whoever survives the Group of Death will be a heavy contender to win the World Cup.
